SmackDown airs tonight (Sept. 12) with a live show emanating from Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. This is the second episode of SmackDown during the three week build towards Wrestlepalooza, which takes place on September 20.
Tonight’s episode of SmackDown features Tiffany Stratton defending the WWE Women’s Championship against Jade Cargill. This is a rematch from their disappointing bout at SummerSlam, where they only had seven minutes to work with bell-to-bell. Cargill thought she had that match won after hitting her Jaded finishing move, but she was a little overzealous and yanked Tiffany’s foot onto the rope during the pin fall. The match continued and Stratton went on to win with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever. In the aftermath of that victory, Stratton has bragged more about her undefeated record in 2025, while Cargill is sticking with the excuse that the champ just got lucky at SummerSlam. Jade said she can teach Tiffany a thing or two about undefeated streaks, but she has yet to back up those words in a WWE ring.
This match is pretty much a make or break moment for Cargill in WWE. If she wins the women’s championship, then it means WWE thinks she is good enough to be the top star in the women’s division on Friday nights. If she loses again, then it’s hard to see why she would be contending for this title again any time soon, and it would be another sign that WWE doesn’t think she is ready for this kind of push. This is a WWE television match, so there’s also the possibility that outside interference from Nia Jax or Bianca Belair will ruin the finish, resulting in no clear winner. That could also be interpreted as a sign that WWE still wants to see Jade make more progress in the ring before they are willing to strap the rocket to her back.
