SmackDown airs tonight (Aug. 8) with a live show emanating from Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This is the first episode of SmackDown during the four week build towards Clash in Paris, which takes place on Aug. 31. Brock Lesnar returned to WWE at the end of SummerSlam to take out freshly-turned babyface John Cena with an F-5. Needless to say, there’s a lot of controversy surrounding WWE’s decision to bring back The Beast after it seemed like he was banned for the last 18 months or so. Lesnar didn’t appear on this week’s Raw, and he’s not currently advertised for tonight’s SmackDown. That doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t show up in Montreal, but for now WWE isn’t telling us anything about him ahead of time.

Maybe one reason why Brock isn’t advertised is because WWE needs more time to figure out how to pair him up again with Paul Heyman in kayfabe. If you recall, when Lesnar returned to WWE way back in 2012 to start a program with Cena, he tried to cut his own promo during a contract signing and miserably failed. It resulted in some hilariously bad verbiage like, “This is a real feeling that you’re feeling, because I can feel it…I’m the reason you’re feeling the way you’re feeling right now, John.” Vince McMahon brought Paul Heyman back to WWE ASAP following that disaster of a promo from Lesnar. With that in mind, maybe it really is the best thing for Cena’s story with Brock if John is the only one in the building tonight. Cena will no doubt have to address what Lesnar did to him at SummerSlam, and maybe even give us an idea of when they will be fighting each other.

WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is scheduled to appear live on tonight’s broadcast. Now that his story with Cena is over, who will Rhodes defend the belt against at Clash in Paris? If Drew McIntyre wants to take Cody’s title ASAP, WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton delivered on her word and beat Jade Cargill at SummerSlam. At SummerSlam, the Wyatt Sicks proved they are better at climbing ladders than the rest of the SmackDown tag team division. Another WWE steel cage match was ruined when Solo Sikoa’s MFTs interfered at SummerSlam to screw over Jacob Fatu. GM Nick Aldis will need to come up with a different gimmick next time that’s better at preventing outside interference, because steel cages clearly aren’t good at doing that in WWE.
