SmackDown airs tonight (May 9) with a live show emanating from Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. This is the final episode of SmackDown during the three week build towards Backlash, which takes place on Saturday (May 10).

WWE Champion John Cena couldn’t be seen last week on WWE programming after Randy Orton hit him with multiple RKOs the week before. But the champ is back on SmackDown tonight, and he’ll have one last chance to trash talk Orton on the mic ahead of their title match at Backlash. Orton said he’s bringing back the Legend Killer to punt Cena’s head clean off his shoulders when they wrestle one last time in St. Louis. Cena has not been able to lay out Orton since WrestleMania 41,and I don’t think John has a very good chance to do it tonight either. That’s because Cena is a huge favorite to retain the gold at Backlash. If WWE wants to create the illusion that Randy has a chance to win, he’ll likely have another RKO outta nowhere in store for John. That is, unless R-Truth takes the bullet for his childhood hero.

Jade Cargill vs. Nia Jax is booked for tonight in a number one contender’s match to Tiffany Stratton’s WWE women’s championship. Cargill made a statement in a tag team match last week when she powerbombed and pinned Jax. LA Knight and Damian Priest vs. Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa is also scheduled for SmackDown. Solo might be the fall guy here considering both babyfaces are challenging for Fatu’s United States championship at Backlash. Drew McIntyre will also be in that title match, but he’s not part of this bout.  Aleister Black won his WWE return match last week by knocking out The Miz with Black Mass, before facing off with Carmelo Hayes. Women’s United States Champion Zelina Vega defeated Piper Niven last week, while Chelsea Green was grieving over the loss of her belt. Nick Aldis better book Chelsea in a title rematch ASAP before she takes him to the Supreme Court.
