SmackDown airs tonight (Jan. 9) with a show (live on Netflix in certain international markets, taped version airing in its normal time slot in the USA) emanating from Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany. This is the sixth episode of SmackDown during the nine week build to Royal Rumble, which takes place on January 31 in Saudi Arabia.

Tonight’s main event is a Three Stages of Hell match between Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre for the WWE championship. The first stage is a straight up wrestling match (not very hellish), the second stage is a Falls Count Anywhere match, and the third stage (if necessary) is an old school Steel Cage match. The first wrestler to win two stages walks out of hell as WWE champion. This is the first time a Three Stages of Hell match has ever been booked on SmackDown, so it’s a pretty big deal.  Rhodes already defeated McIntyre in title matches at both Wrestlepalooza in September and Saturday Night’s Main Event in November. However, Cody hasn’t been able to lay a finger on Drew over the last few weeks thanks to GM Nick Aldis negotiating a bad deal to reinstate McIntyre from suspension. Three Stages of Hell is the kind of gimmick match that ends an intensely personal feud, so I think there’s a very good chance that McIntyre gets his comeuppance for setting Dusty Rhodes on fire and walks away empty-handed once again.
